Profile
Nevado del Ruiz (also known ancestrally as Gran Kumanday) is one of Colombia’s most imposing and closely monitored active volcanoes, located at 5,321 meters above sea level in the Central Cordillera, on the border between the departments of Caldas and Tolima. Protected within Los Nevados National Natural Park, this stratovolcano is famous both for its ecosystemic importance and its historical seismic and volcanic activity.
Authorized Points of Interest: Tours are conducted exclusively in vehicle caravans accompanied by authorized guides:
Laguna Negra: Located in the buffer zone, ideal for acclimatizing and enjoying the páramo landscape.
Valley of the Tombs (Valley of Silence): Situated at 4,450 meters above sea level, this is the highest point permitted for tourists. Its desert-like, gray landscape resembles the lunar surface due to the historical accumulation of volcanic ash.
Chalet de Arenales: A former ski resort active in the mid-20th century, now a reminder of global glacial retreat.
Recommendations for Visitors:
Physical Preparation: Altitude sickness (soroche) is common due to the altitude. It is recommended to drink coca tea or hydrate well before and during the ascent.
Clothing: Extreme temperatures range between -2°C and -10°C. It is essential to dress in layers (thermal clothing, waterproof jacket, gloves, and hat).
Entry and Logistics: The usual entry hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. National Park entrance fees, medical assistance insurance, and the mandatory guide service must be paid.
